Valli's Designs are Romantic and Whimsical, But Playful This Season

There was something special about this season's Giambattista Valli show. The models were relaxed, happy and confident as they took their places on the runway. They looked like they were having fun, rather than feeling nervous. The atmosphere backstage was lighthearted and friendly, with no sign of any stress or tension.

Valli's designs are known for being romantic, dreamy and whimsical, but this season he has added an extra element: a sense of playfulness.

“I always loved the idea of nomadic. But more than ever–and in my country first of all—it’s nice to have no limits; no borders. I want to see the horizon and get inspired by other cultures. Be curious, be nomadic,” he said.

Valli's collections were always a feast for the eyes, but they were also a feast for the senses.

He found his palette in a collage of flower markets, buildings and landscapes in Asia, and Botticelli paintings—and rendered every exit in its own shade of joy. His emotions materialized in a look that evoked the glamour of the Roman aristocracy in the 1960s. Luxurious, louche and graphic, it was all about colors and trimmings, maxi-earrings, crystal bindis, turbans and big shades.

It was all about the finger waves for the SS23 show—and for good reason.

These beautiful waves framed the models' faces, pulled back into a low ponytail to show off their cheekbones and highlight their features. Highlighting your best features is key to any great look, but it's especially important when you're trying to make a statement with your hair.

Makeup artists were inspired by the subtle elegance of classic glamour. The focus was on highlighting natural beauty with a soft and supple look that achieved a modern edge. Glossy skin and groomed brows were accentuated with hydrated lips to complete the look. So SS23!
