Balmain's Pre-Fall 2023 Collection: A Study in Sophistication

For its pre-fall collection, Balmain has embraced the idea of a conversation between founder Pierre Balmain and creative director Olivier Rousteing.

The collection was designed to showcase both men’s and women’s clothing that reflected the brand's history while also moving it forward.

The menswear was marked by military-inspired details like frogging and structural facades of crystal. The womenswear featured sculptural silhouettes and platforms that signified Rousteing’s ongoing ambitions for the house, while the restored shoulder pads seemed a generous nod to Christophe Decarnin, who enabled Rousteing to inhabit his shoes.

The 1970s were a time of experimentation and revolution. They were also a time of incredible luxury.

The 1970s were a decade of excess, and nowhere was that more evident than at Balmain. The house founder’s bold use of platform shoes led to flares, which inevitably led to the decade in which the house founder began to wind down his designed output. Rousteing stretched the boundaries of 1970s suiting into an almost sportily sleek—yet lavish—exploration of the body’s contours defined by button and seam.

The post-art deco context of the founder's early days is referenced in sculpturally shaped cascading bows.

With so many timeless pieces, this collection is something you will wear for years to come.
