The Dior Men's Fashion Show in Egypt: A Celebration of Luxury and History
It was a night like no other when Kim Jones' Dior Men Fall 2023 collection took over the Giza desert. In the blazing sun, we were left with ashes—the only evidence of what had been there before.
But as soon as night fell, Jones' vision came to life: vast, elegant, and cinematic. The tombs of ancient pharaohs lit up, a snake of LEDs illuminating the runway into existence to the Creative Director's Spotify played pounding techno.
The world of fashion is an infinite one. It's a place where the past, present, and future coexist—sometimes in harmony, sometimes in conflict.
Kim Jones turned to the past for his latest collection at #DiorMenFall 2023. Held against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Giza pyramids in Egypt, this debut outfit epitomizes the collection’s core examination of shaping the future with ideas from the past. The historical significance of the kilt turned into an overgarment paired with trousers and a top of couture-influenced fabrics and detailing.
The 3D-printing of a helmet and boots incorporating House codes suggests digital directions for craft.
This collection is a celebration of all that is possible. There were 75 models, because that’s the number of years since the great couturier founded his house in Paris in 1947.
Key look for Fall 2023
Dior Men Fall 2023 is a celebration of the new and the classic, with a focus on futurism and fluidity. The collection combines draped and transparent tailoring, contoured panels, House codes in knit, couture-inspired embroideries, constructions and kilts, performance wear and the possibilities of 3D-printing.
For his latest collection, designer Kim Jones has once again proven that he's a master of the art of mixing and matching. The clothes were a wash of neutrals, sand, stone and whites were combined with textural tech piece's, tulle scarves and flowing layers.
It was futuristic, as it so often is with Kim Jones, and peppered with tailoring that never tries too hard; oversized jackets, with roll-necks, kilts and gorgeous jackets. The alignment of tailoring and sportswear is difficult to achieve, and yet Jones manages to make it bind seamless. It's his signature it seems.
As both a Fall collection premiere and a birthday party for Dior’s 75th, Jones wants the celebration to be spiritual, to focus on the cosmos – much like the Ancient Egyptians, who built the show's breathtaking backdrop to reflect the star path of Orion's Belt above.
Kim Jones, designer said; “With this anniversary and the collections' we've done that are all entwined and building to a conclusion, it felt appropriate to do something very special at the end of the year,”
“It is the summing up of past, present and future in a place – in front of the Great Pyramid.”
The sci-fi aesthetic also found its way into the collection in the form of knits in bangs of colours that were a telling of the superstitious: the Illuminati pyramid was ablaze in one graphic; constellations of the Zodiac in another. The sky is a big place, and it's full of inspiration. And that's why, on this auspicious night, Jones wisely chose to sidestep any obvious reference to Pharoahs or Egyptian archaeology.
Instead, he was talking about how he was looking upwards to the sky for various star-related references. “Really, I was looking at two things. The ancient Egyptians were obsessed by astronomy, and Monsieur Dior was obsessed by stars and astrology. And,” he added, “when I go into the desert, I look at the sky
